New Zealand – Napier: the art deco city

Napier has a striking similarity with Santa Barbara – both were rebuilt with a strong architectural design theme following destruction during a severe earthquake. In the case of Napier the event took place in 1931 and the building style adopted throughout the whole central business district was that of Art Deco. Examples of some of the buildings are included below. Some of the buildings virtually retain their original design, others have undergone modifications over the years, especially at street level.
