Things That Go Bump In The Night

At each camp there is a night drive which takes place immediately after the “sundowner” at around 6:00 pm. In the front seat of the Landrover with the guide/driver, there is a “spotter” with a high intensity spotlight. He scans continuously with the light and miraculously picks out creatures we were amazed he could see. We see most of them, but taking a photograph is challenging to say the least!

The most common night walkers by far were the genets. The saying goes “four genets equal one leopard sighting” but sometimes we only saw the genets…they were very cute however. Though it looks like one, they are not a member of the cat family, but something entirely their own. Other nocturnals we saw but could not photograph were the elephant shrews and three species of the mongoose. We did not see the hardest to find of all, the aardvark, though we did come across an active burrow. Close but no cigar.
