Up Close and Personal: Bush Walks

One of the well-publicized features of safaris in Zambia is the “Walking Safari”. Guests are accompanied by an experienced wildlife guide and an armed park ranger on a relaxed (unless you surprise an elephant!) walk of up to 3 hours in the early morning. The purpose of the walking safari is to understand the “smaller” environment, not observe or track large animals.

The guides, who have an amazing breadth and depth of information regarding the plants and animals also have a wealth of knowledge regarding traditional medicinal uses of the plant fruits, seeds, and bark, etc.

We learned more than we needed to know about poop and tracks, but it was fun trying to figure out who had walked our way the night before.
